unsaid
Some stories are carried for years without a single word. Not to a friend, not to a partner, not to a mother. Here, a woman can finally say it, in her own voice, without ever giving her name. And someone will be on the other end.
For the stories never told.
The Unsaid Project is an anonymous listening exhibition. Women who survived rape or sexual assault call in and tell their story, often for the first time. Their voices are played in a quiet gallery, one phone at a time, for anyone willing to listen.
Share your Story
Say it in your own words
If something happened to you that you have never told anyone, you can tell it here. Call our story line from any phone, at any hour. You don't have to give your name. You don't have to be ready to say everything. You can say as much or as little as you want.
The story line: 1-800-MYSTORY
What happens when you call
A woman's voice will greet you and explain how it works. Then you choose:
Press 1 to share your story with others. Your voice may be played in the exhibition, so other women know they are not alone.
Press 2 to speak privately. Your story is recorded for no one. It is just a place to say it out loud, once.
You can hang up at any time. That's okay too.
Your privacy
We never ask for your name. If you choose to share, a member of our team listens to every story before it is played. We remove names, places and any details that could identify you or anyone else. If a story can't be shared safely, we don't share it.
A gentle note: This story line is not a crisis line, and no one will answer live. If you are in danger or need to talk to someone now, call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800-656-4673, or 911 in an emergency.

The Exhibition
Walk into a quiet white gallery. Black rotary phones wait under soft, warm light, each in its own space. Pick one. Lift the receiver. someone you will never meet tells you what happened to them, in their own voice, start to finish. When they are done, you can sit with it as long as you need.
No one who shared their story is ever in the room. They spoke from somewhere safe, on their own time. You are here to receive it.
